(New York, N.Y.) — Brynn Heller from Troop 3108 in Manhattan is Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s (GSGNY) 2022 Future Woman of Distinction, honored for her exemplary leadership and advocacy.
GSGNY presented Brynn with this prestigious award at the 30th
annual Women of Distinction breakfast at the end of October. Each
year, GSGNY recognizes a Future Woman of Distinction as part of a
celebration of powerful women leaders in New York City who
demonstrate core Girl Scout values.
A senior at the High School of American Studies at Lehman College,
Brynn has been a Girl Scout for 13 years and has earned the Bronze,
Silver and Gold awards, the highest Girl Scouting honors. Brynn is
passionate about environmental activism, and has been a fierce
advocate of designating the Hudson Canyon, the largest submarine
canyon along the US’ Atlantic Coast, as a National Marine Sanctuary.
The Canyon is located at the mouth of the Hudson River.
“We are incredibly proud to honor Brynn as the 2022 Future Woman of
Distinction,” said Meridith Maskara, CEO of GSGNY. “Brynn is a leader
and a visionary at her core. We commend her unwavering commitment to
community service and commitment to the environment. She is a role
model for Girl Scouts everywhere.”
For her Gold Award project, Brynn created a video, designed a
petition, and spoke at various industry and community events in
support of sanctuary status for Hudson Canyon. She went on to lobby
Congressional staff, testify at a National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) public hearing, and submit written comments to
NOAA.
“Girl Scouts empowers girls to help create positive, lasting
change in the world. Girl Scouts gave me the tools to discover
and pursue my passions for community service and advocacy,”
said Brynn. “I am incredibly honored to be the Girl Scouts of
Greater New York 2022 Future Woman of Distinction.
In addition to this environmental work, Brynn serves as the President of the Environmental Club and the Women Empowerment Club at her school, and has worked at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium or Central Park Zoo for the past eight seasons.
Brynn plans to pursue environmental studies in college and plans to continue to advocate for environmental and other significant causes, including continuing the Hudson Canyon advocacy work.
