–Former First Deputy Mayor of the City of New York Grillo will be celebrated for her exceptional leadership in the public sector, and her devotion to racial equity and inclusion–
(New York, N.Y.) — On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, Girl Scouts of Greater New York will honor Lorraine Grillo, Former First Deputy Mayor of the City of New York, for her exemplary leadership and advocacy at its annual Gold Achievement Gala at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The event supports Girl Scouts’ signature leadership development programming across the five boroughs. Each year, Girl Scouts of Greater New York presents leaders who exemplify outstanding achievement and integrity in their fields with Gold Achievement Awards inspired by the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.
Grillo has had a nearly three-decade long career in government, beginning with her work at the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA), where she held various positions, and most recently serving as the First Deputy Mayor of the City of New York. Between these two positions, Grillo also served as the New York City Senior Advisor for Recovery under Mayor de Blasio, where she played a pivotal role in building a better and safer New York City, cutting the red tape for small businesses, securing the City’s $1 billion investment in Life Sciences, and driving the launch of the City’s Cleanup Corps and City Artist Corps.
Throughout her lengthy career at SCA, Grillo transformed the New York City school system through her various roles as Director of Government and Community Relations, Senior Director of Real Estate Services, Executive Director/Chief of Staff to the President, and Acting President and CEO — the longest-serving president and one of only two re-appointments of this position. She successfully opened 26 new schools, built over 80,000 K-12 school seats and over 9,000 universal Pre-K seats, coordinated almost 4,000 capital improvement projects in New York City buildings, and managed a total of $28 billion in budgets.
“I am deeply grateful to receive this award from the Girl Scouts of Greater New York,” said Grillo. “I’m proud to have been a Girl Scout myself and I believe in the important work of this organization. I’m honored to be a part of this lineup of incredible honorees and this special evening.”
“We are proud to honor Lorraine’s groundbreaking work in New York City government throughout her extensive and impressive career,” said Meridith Maskara, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater New York. “New York City is run by so many incredible women, and for decades, Lorraine has been one of them. She is a exemplary role model to today’s Girl Scouts, showing them that they can be the leaders of tomorrow.”
In addition to honoring Grillo, the Girl Scouts of Greater New York is also honoring former CEO of BBH USA Amani Duncan, Principal of Glasheen & Co. Maeve DuVally, Chief Human Resources Officer of TPG Global Anilu Vazquez-Ubarri, and CEO of Transit Wireless Melinda White.
