(New York, N.Y.) — Hana Prokop is Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s (GSGNY) 2023 Future Woman of Distinction, recognized for her leadership skills, commitment to supporting younger girls, and her community service work. GSGNY presented Hana the prestigious award at the 30th annual Women of Distinction breakfast held on November 1. Each year, GSGNY recognizes a Future Woman of Distinction as part of a celebration of powerful women leaders in New York City who demonstrate core Girl Scout values.
A senior at Hunter College High School, Hana has been a Girl Scout for nine years. She earned her silver award for creating a website on cybersecurity and safety for children. She is currently working on earning the Gold Award, the highest Girl Scouting award. Her project, “Making Cents of Finance,” includes a website that focuses on providing educational lessons, videos, and games on financial literacy for middle and high school-aged students.
Hana is also a top Girl Scout Cookie seller, having sold over 5,000 boxes of cookies. For the past eight years she has earned a spot on the prestigious Cookie Executive Committee, where she assisted over 200 younger Girl Scouts in improving sales, marketing, and customer service for their Girl Scout Cookie businesses. She credits much of her interest in finance to her successful Girl Scout Cookie business, as well as serving as the Co-President of the Females in Finance club at her school and as one of two student CEOs for Rock the Street Wall Street, where she is able to develop and teach new business and finance-related curriculum to students.
“Hana's unwavering dedication to inspiring future generations of young women is a shining example of what it means to be a Girl Scout. So much of our mission revolves around showing our Girl Scouts that they can be anything they desire, and Hana remains true to that mission each day,” said Meridith Maskara, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater New York. “It is with great joy that we recognize her outstanding contributions and celebrate her as a true woman of distinction."
"Girl Scouts has provided me with an incredible community of passionate problem solvers, connecting me with girls in my troop, across New York, and around the country. The supportive and empowering environment that Girl Scouts creates motivates me to take initiative, voice my future goals, and mentor younger girls to continue the inclusive legacy of this girl-led organization,” said Hana Prokop, the 2023 Future Woman of Distinction. “I am honored to be named the 2023 Future Woman of Distinction, a testament to my journey with Girl Scouts and the power of female leadership."
Hana is also committed to community service, serving as the junior board treasurer of the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, the chief content officer of the youth-run nonprofit Kids Fight Climate Change, and a volunteer at the Hunter Elementary School Library. She is also a level 10 competitive gymnast. Hana is in the midst of college application season, and she is passionate about pursuing a major that weaves together her interests of finance and behavioral economics.
