be counted census 2020 patch

Girl Scouts at a Voter Registration Drive

Participate in the GSGNY Be Counted Census 2020 Patch Program!

Every ten years, the United States Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency, sets out to count every person living in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories. The 2020 Census is taking place Spring 2020, and in some locations, the counting has already begun!

The 2020 Census is underway! Starting in March, residents began receiving instructions in the mail, and are encouraged to go online at any time to fill out their 2020 Census Form.

An accurate census count is incredibly important. The United States government relies on census data to determine community funding, congressional representation, and so much more.

To earn the patch:

We’re calling on GSGNY Girl Scouts, troops, leaders, and volunteers to help spread the word about this year’s census. Not only will you be doing your part to ensure an accurate census count, you’ll also be practicing civic engagement.

NOTE: Due to all Girl Scouting activities shifting online , this is now a digital effort!

  1. Collect at least 15 pledge cards (per girl) from adults who say they will be counted by the census.
  2. Submit your pledge cards to the Advocacy Team.
  3. Complete a Be Counted Census 2020 Patch Submission Form in order to receive your patch in the mail!
  4. OPTIONAL: Create and share a video or creative image for social media about the importance of an accurate census count—incorporating research you looked up. You may use your parent’s social media accounts to do this and can find resources below. Don’t forget to tag @girlscoutsnyc!

Submission Deadline: July 1, 2020.

Because the deadline to collect information for the 2020 Census has been extended by the U.S. Census Bureau, we're extending our deadline too! Make sure to get your pledge cards collected and forms filled out by July 1.

Patches will be mailed to troops/girls after the conclusion of the program — please note production and distribution WILL BE delayed.

We appreciate the interest we’ve received from Girl Scouts around the nation who are interested in our GSGNY Be Counted 2020 Census Patch Program. At this time, we are only able to extend the patch opportunity to Girl Scouts in the Greater New York Council.

If you would like to have your Council participate, please have them reach out to to our Advocacy Team and we can guide them on how to set up a similar program in your area.

For more information about this campaign, check out our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section (below).

  1. What is the census?
    • The 2020 Census counts every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories.

  2. What does the census have to do with Girl Scouting?
    • Girl Scouts know that you have to get involved and be active in order to make change. When people participate in the census count, they’re letting the government know that we are here, and we have a voice. If people choose not to complete the 2020 census, entire communities could miss out on important resources like funding for schools. It’s up to all of us to make sure we are all counted!

  3. How often does the Census happen?
    • The U.S. Census happens every ten years.

  4. Who should fill out the census?
    • Everyone and anyone living in the 50 states, District of Columbia and five U.S. territories.

  5. Where can I find out more about the census?
