New Leaders

Welcome New Troop Leaders!

Thank you for volunteering your time to help build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Before you embark on this extraordinary journey of leadership, you’ll need to complete the steps below.

If you have questions, our Customer Care Team is available to help or call us at 212-645-4000.

Getting Started

STEP 1: Get Your Troop Number to Join Girl Scouts as a Leader

A Membership Development Specialist at council will provide you with your new Troop Number. Not sure who your Membership Development Specialist is? Contact us at  with the subject line: New Troop Number assistance.

Become a Girl Scout Member after receiving your new troop number. The cost of an adult membership is $25. NOTE: Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

Once you have a troop number, start your registration process here. Enter your contact information and troop number when prompted and select “Search”. You will see a list of available adult volunteer opportunities appear. Select the checkbox next to “Co-Leader”. Proceed to the membership information and payment page.

STEP 2: Complete a Background Check

Shortly after registering, you will receive an email from Asurint with instructions on how to complete your background check. Please do not share this link with others as it will be customized to you. The link will expire in 24 hours. Your background check is valid for 3 years.

STEP 3: Complete Leader Training

Before you can meet with your troop, all leaders must fulfill the mandatory training listed below:

STEP 4: Open a Troop Bank Account

Once at least TWO troop leaders have successfully been registered, background cleared, and completed the GSGNY Leader’s Guide to Success training, your Volunteer Support Specialist will send you an email containing a link to request a Bank Authorization Letter.

This letter requests the courtesy of a no fee, no minimum balance checking account. Every troop must have their own troop bank account with two registered, background cleared, and unrelated signers.

Don't know who your Volunteer Support Specialist is? Please email our Customer Care Team with the subject line: New Leader Volunteer Support.

STEP 5: Recruit girls and adults to your troop.

It’s time to invite girls to join in the fun! Once all troop leaders have fulfilled the requirements above, your troop will be opened to girls in our online Opportunity Catalog. Be sure all interested girls and their families have your Troop Number.

Initially, your troop will have 15 spaces open to girls (12 for Daisy troops). If you wish to include additional girls in your troop (and can meet the safety ratios as outlined in Volunteer Essentials), contact your Volunteer Support Specialist and ask to increase the number of available spaces for girls.

STEP 6: Plan your meeting(s) using the Volunteer Tool Kit (VTK)

The Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) is a robust digital planning tool that supports troop leaders in planning out their year of Girl Scout fun!
