Happy Holidays from our CEO

Happy Holidays from our CEO

Dear Girl Scout Friends and Family,

2017 was a challenging year for many girls and women. We had daily reminders of the obstacles we continue to face in the work world, politics and government, and in our own communities. But it was also an incredibly inspiring year. I saw countless girls and women stand up for themselves and others--including girls and leaders from the Girl Scouts of Greater New York family who continued to do what we have always done--make the world a better place.

In 2017, Girl Scouts testified at City Hall and wrote to their council members, encouraging them to prioritize girls' leadership development in the city budget. They raised awareness for the lack of female historical figures among the statues in Central Park, and advocated for change. They stood up to call for the creation of a museum dedicated to women and for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. And they told their own stories - like the Girl Scouts in Troop 6000, whose honesty and willingness to speak publicly helped change misconceptions about people who are homeless. These same young women announced the expansion of Troop 6000 in July in a girl-led press conference at City Hall.

Each of these Girl Scouts, and many more of you across our city, demonstrated extraordinary courage, confidence and character every time you spoke up and took action. I am so incredibly proud of all your great work in 2017. I'm even more excited for what will happen in 2018. At GSGNY, we're declaring advocacy the word of the year!

GSGNY is "By Girls, For Girls" and, I want to hear from you:

How will you plan to make the world a better place in 2018 through advocacy? How will you speak up about issues that are important to you, take action to make change in your community, and lead in accordance with our promise and law? My work is inspired by you, please write to me and tell me your plans.
