Welcome to the Girl Scouts of Greater NY blog

to this special space on our new website, dedicated especially to teen girls. We thought it was important to create a place where you can talk to each other and to women leaders about issues that are important to you as you prepare for college or entering the workforce.

A big focus of this blog will be on sharing insights on leadership and discussing what leadership means to you---how you exhibit it and what you want to see in leaders who are in your life.

There’s lots of research out there showing that girls easily exhibit informal leadership when they are with their friends.  And unlike boys, girls don’t feel the need to have just one person identified as the dominant leader---girls like shared leadership. But when it comes to formal leadership, like seeking a position in student government, few girls pursue these roles. I am intrigued by that and wonder why?

I think leadership has a lot to do with knowing your values---what you will and what you won’t do – and sticking to those values. What I learned from Scouting helped me to become the person and leader I am today. Developing into a leader wasn’t easy. Twice during my early career, there were situations in which I believed I needed to speak out against what I thought were injustices. It was scary, but it was also the right thing to do. In one situation it worked out well; in the other it didn’t. In the end, as a result of sticking to – and believing in - my values, I became a stronger leader.

This blog will be a place where I hope you will share your thoughts, ask questions, and help other girls develop the skills they will need to become tomorrow's leaders. We will have guest bloggers, like Ann Shoket, Editor-In-Chief of Seventeen, who will join the conversation, and we will also turn to you for blog posts..

I hope you enjoy this blog.

Hello, I am a Girl Scout Leader in Vienna, WV and I have a multi level group. My cadettes and above are interested in visiting NY this summer and would like to see if there might be a sister troop that would like to meet with us and show us around New York. I would also like to see what you might suggest for lodging as we have never been to New York. Please email me at leesker34@msn.com. My name is Lisa

Hi. I am a GS Leader in Greater Los Angeles Council. Our Cadette troop will be visiting NYC in June 2013. We will be ready to bridge to seniors and thought it would be fun to bridge over the Brooklyn Bridge. Is there any type of program or way to find out if a NYC Senior troop would be interested in doing this with us?
