Camp Bus Update

This past Girl Scout year, we had over 3,700 girls and adults participate in programs at Camp Kaufmann.  As we continue to develop and expand camp programming to offer environmental leadership opportunities for girls, we are considering how best you utilize our resources. Last year, 340 campers attending Troop, Theme or Summer Weekend Getaway programs booked an individual $55 seat on a Council-arranged bus.  What you may not know is that the Council subsidizes bus costs, particularly when a bus is not filled to or near capacity. We did begin promoting Troops booking either a mini bus or full size bus as part of their camp trip which had the added benefit of allowing the bus stop to be decided by the Troops.

Beginning with the new Girl Scout year, we want to continue the practice of Troops planning their camp trips and in addition, booking their own bus directly.  As has been our practice, we will continue to post on our website a list of bus companies that we have identified that have adequate Certificates of Insurance on file and whose safety records has been checked through the New York State Department of Transportation's website. Of course, events that are for girls only will continue to include transportation to and from the city.

Camp is a quintessential Girl Scout experience. It is a place where girls learn new skills, meet new people and work as part of team. In fact in recent surveys, girls rated camp as the activity Girl Scouts does better than other organizations.  We hope that during this, our 100th Anniversary year, you and your girls take the opportunity to visit Camp Kaufmann and enjoy the outdoor adventure that is unique to the Girl Scout camp experience.  As always, we are here to assist you in planning your camp trip. Please contact Karen Lundgard, Camp Director, at 212-645-4000, ext. 226 or klundgard@girlscoutsnyc.org or Erica Mariano, Camp Program Associate, at ext. 233 or emariano@girlscoutsnyc.org.
